Leo stopped in his tracks and quickly turned his head to see who, or what, had spoken to him. Although the sun's glare through the trees made it difficult to see, he could just make out the faint outlines of a figure. When squinting failed to further reveal the figure, Leo raised his left wing as shade for his eyes, and suddenly was able to see who was addressing him... none other than his uncle Juan.
He hadn't seen Juan in years. In fact, no one in Leo's family had. The youngest of Leo's father's forty-six siblings, Juan had always been the troublemaker of the family, from early childhood pranks to teenage misdemeanors to adult felonies. Most recently, Juan had spent six months imprisoned in the Reichardt Duck Farm in Petaluma, California on for intentionally leading a small migrating flock of Mandarin ducks (the historical rivals of his native Bufflehead family) to China rather than Florida, and abandoning them to the dark fate that awaits all ducks within 300 miles of the town formerly known as Peking.
"Uncle Juan, what are you doing here?" Leo asked.
"We don't have time for questions, Leo! You need to stop this foolishness now and come with me!"

Howdy! I'm John, a friendly Brit from Bournemouth who has the fantastic opportunity to expand Unis in the USA. Following in the footsteps of the original creator of such a brilliant work, Alice Fishburn, is no easy task, but it does mean I will be exploring the great country of the United States of America this summer and getting to know some of its finest educational establishments!
This blog is intended primarily to keep folks updated on what I've been up to under the great open skies of this massive country, but I will also be publishing the articles I write about the universities I visit, as I write them. For the reviews I've already done, see here. Hopefully I will also be able to post my thoughts on education in America as a whole, since this is the main aim of the trip, so anyone interested in this should stay tuned!
My aim is to use only couchsurfing.com (for why, see here) and my friends and family for accommodation. Feel free to email me any questions! johntdf@gmail.com
About Unis in the USA
Uni in the USA is a subsection of The Good Schools Guide International, an online resource aimed at UK expats posted abroad, and providing information and help for chosing overseas schools. The first edition of Uni in the USA was published in 2004 and was mainly written by British Harvard student Alice Fishburn, with help from Anthony Nemecek, then Director of the US Education Advisory Service, The US-UK Fulbright Commission. The book was aimed at British students who are considering spending their university years on the other side of the pond. It provided top quality (not to mention very entertaining) advice and information about this unique educational experience, as well as reviews of all the top schools in America. Five years on, and Unis in the USA is now available online and is this summer being expanded to include a whole range of exciting new universities.
The Good Schools Guide International is itself a subsidiary of the widely acclaimed Good Schools Guide, a guide to British Schools written by parents for parents.
